Once upon a time, sports were said to be a metaphor for life, and this was also most frequently suggested as the explanation for their popularity. In fact, the Olympics have demonstrated that they are able not only to breathe life into individuals’ stories but also to provide a language for historical and political processes that are changing the world: they offer a different semantic which contrasts the obsolete one usually offered by economics and politics, and which may even be more effective.
